Monroe is the seat of Union County in North Carolina, southeast of Charlotte. Its map is built around a traditional county seat: a compact grid of downtown blocks around the courthouse, with main roads leading out in several directions toward the surrounding towns and farmland.
As Charlotte's suburbs have expanded, Monroe has grown too. Newer residential areas with curving streets surround the older core, and major routes such as US 74 cross the area. The Monroe Expressway, a newer toll road, draws a long curved line around the northern part of the city.
