Montceau-les-Mines, in Saône-et-Loire, was created as a commune in 1856 to serve the coal mines of the Blanzy basin, and its map still shows that purpose. The Canal du Centre runs through the heart of the town, with quays and a basin at its centre, and the streets on either side grew around mine shafts, rail lines and industrial sites rather than a medieval core.
Around the centre lie the cités minières, housing estates built by the mining company for its workers. They are easy to recognise from above, with rows of identical plots, straight streets and repeated house shapes arranged in regular blocks. Between them, lakes, parks and open ground mark land that was once given over to pits and industry.
Mining ended in the area around the turn of the 2000s, and the town has since turned to other activities and to preserving its heritage.
