Montevarchi sits in the upper Valdarno, the stretch of the Arno valley between Florence and Arezzo. The historic centre has an unusual shape. It is long and oval, and it grew up along the ancient road through the valley, with parallel streets running the length of the old town. The Collegiata di San Lorenzo stands in the middle of it.
Outside the old core, the modern town spreads across the valley floor. There are newer residential blocks, a railway line on the Florence to Rome route, and industrial areas. The Arno runs to the west, and the land rises on both sides towards the Chianti hills and the Pratomagno ridge. The town is also known for the palaeontological museum of the Accademia del Poggio, which holds fossils found in the Valdarno.
