Moreh lies in the southeast of Manipur, on India's border with Myanmar, facing the town of Tamu on the other side. From above, it is a compact settlement in a valley among forested hills, its streets gathered along the main road that arrives from Imphal and continues to the border crossing a short distance beyond the town.
The town is one of the main land gateways between India and Southeast Asia, lying on the route of the Asian Highway network and long important for cross-border trade. Markets, warehouses and transport yards cluster near the frontier, and the town has historically drawn traders and residents from many communities across the region.
