Morena lies in the far north of Madhya Pradesh, north of Gwalior, in the country above the Chambal River. From above, the town is a compact grid of lanes and markets, and the main highway and railway line run through it in a clear north-south direction.
Beyond the town the land opens up into farmland, and the region is well known for its mustard crop. Further north, toward the Chambal, the ground breaks up into the deep, eroded ravines that the region is famous for, a very different texture from the flat fields around the town.
The district also has important early temple sites, including the Bateshwar group and the circular Chausath Yogini temple at Mitawali. A Morena map poster focuses on the town itself, with its central streets and the roads leading out into the plain.
