Mórfou, known in Turkish as Güzelyurt, lies in the north-west of Cyprus, a short distance inland from the bay that shares its name. The land around it is flat and irrigated, and the town sits among orchards that have made the area known for its citrus. From above, the compact centre gives way quickly to a grid of fields and plots divided by roads and tracks.
At the heart of the old town stands the Monastery of Saint Mamas, one of the best-known Orthodox churches on the island. Since 1974 the town has been under Turkish Cypriot administration, and it is referred to by both its Greek and Turkish names. Its citrus-growing reputation has remained a constant.
