Morlaix lies in north-western Brittany, at the point where small rivers meet and continue as a tidal estuary toward the Bay of Morlaix. The town sits deep in a narrow valley, and on a map its streets squeeze along the valley floor before climbing the steep sides in winding lanes and stairways. The waterway and its quays form the spine of the plan.
The town's best-known structure is its two-level stone railway viaduct, built in the 1860s for the Paris–Brest line, which strides across the valley above the old centre. Morlaix also keeps a number of half-timbered houses, including the so-called Maison de la Reine Anne, a reminder of its prosperity as a trading and linen port.
