Morristown, the county seat of Morris County in northern New Jersey, is organised around the Green, a public square at the centre of town from which the main streets fan out in several directions. On a map this gives it a clear hub-and-spoke shape, unusual among American towns that more often follow a simple grid. Residential streets curve and branch as they move away from the centre.
The town played a major role in the American Revolution: the Continental Army wintered in the area, and George Washington used the Ford Mansion as his headquarters in the winter of 1779–80. Morristown National Historical Park, which preserves these sites, was the first national historical park in the United States. Its units include the wooded hills of Jockey Hollow, to the south-west.
