Mossel Bay lies on South Africa's southern coast, at the western end of the Garden Route. From above, the town follows the curve of a sheltered, north-facing bay. The Point, a rocky headland with a lighthouse, marks its southern edge. The harbour and older centre sit on the slope above the water, and newer suburbs and beaches extend east along the shore.
The bay has a long recorded history. In 1488 the Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias landed here, making it one of the earliest European landfalls on this coast. Sailors later left letters in a milkwood tree that is now known as the Post Office Tree. The caves at Cape St Blaize, near the lighthouse, contain important archaeological evidence of early human life.
