Mto wa Mbu sits on the floor of the Great Rift Valley in northern Tanzania, right below the steep escarpment and close to the northern end of Lake Manyara. Its name means river of mosquitoes in Swahili. From above, the main road runs through the centre, and farmland and banana groves spread out around it, watered by streams from the escarpment.
The town lies on the main route from Arusha towards Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, which brings a steady flow of travellers. It is also known for its mix of communities, with people from many different ethnic groups settling here over the past century.
