Munakata lies on the northern coast of Kyushu, roughly halfway between Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Its map combines a coastline of sandy beaches and small fishing harbours with a plain of fields and residential districts inland, while low hills rise to the south. The railway and main roads run through the inland side, where most of the modern town has grown.
The city is best known for Munakata Taisha, a group of shrines dedicated to three goddesses. Together with the island of Okinoshima far out at sea, where access is strictly limited, they form a UNESCO World Heritage site listed in 2017. Oshima, a smaller island closer to the coast, is also part of the city.
