Nan is the capital of Nan province in northern Thailand, set in a green valley near the Lao border. The Nan River runs along the eastern side of the town, and on the map it forms a long, gentle curve that defines the edge of the old centre.
The historic core preserves parts of its old walls and a scatter of Buddhist temples. The best known is Wat Phumin, famous for its cruciform hall and murals depicting local life in the nineteenth century. These sites sit within a compact grid of streets that is easy to explore on foot.
