Nanded lies on the Godavari River in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. From above, the river curves along the city, and the older neighbourhoods cluster close to its banks in a fine, irregular network of lanes. Newer districts spread outward on straighter roads, and the railway passes through the urban area, adding a long, straight line to the plan.
Nanded is one of the most important pilgrimage centres in Sikhism. Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, spent his final days here and died in 1708, and the Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib, usually called Hazur Sahib, stands on the site. It is one of the five takhts, the seats of authority in the Sikh faith, and draws pilgrims from across the world.
