Beed is the headquarters of Beed district in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, set on the dry Deccan plateau. The Bindusara river runs through the town, and on a map its course forms a clear line through the street network. The older, tightly built quarters sit close to the water, and newer neighbourhoods extend outward along the main roads.
The town has a long past. It was ruled by a succession of Deccan kingdoms and later formed part of the Nizam of Hyderabad's state. Its old fabric still shows in the narrow, irregular lanes of the centre. The contrast between that dense core and the wider, more regular blocks of later expansion gives the map a strong sense of layers.
One of its best-known landmarks is the Kankaleshwar temple, a stone Shiva temple built in the middle of a water tank. The tank shows up as a small rectangle of water among the streets.
