Narva is Estonia's easternmost city, on the west bank of the Narva River, which forms the border with Russia. On a map, the river runs along the city's eastern edge. Hermann Castle rises on the Estonian bank, and the fortress of Ivangorod stands almost within reach on the opposite shore. The Friendship Bridge links the two sides, and the large Narva Reservoir lies to the south.
Narva was once admired for its Baroque old town, but most of it was destroyed in 1944 and replaced by Soviet-era apartment blocks. Only a few historic buildings, such as the Town Hall, survive. Most residents speak Russian, which makes the city unusual within Estonia. The riverside promenade below the castle is now one of its best-known public spaces.

Hermann Castle on the Estonian side faces the Ivangorod fortress in Russia across the water. Together they create one of the most striking border scenes in Europe.

After the destruction of 1944, most of Narva was rebuilt with large Soviet-era apartment blocks, which form a wide, regular pattern west of the river.
