Võrtsjärv is the largest lake lying entirely within Estonia and the second largest in the country overall, after Lake Peipus, which Estonia shares with Russia. On a map it reads as an elongated shape running roughly north to south, with smooth shores and low, open land around it.
The lake is very shallow for its size, which makes it warm in summer and quick to freeze in winter. Its main outflow is the Emajõgi, which leaves from the northeastern side and flows east through Tartu toward Lake Peipus.
