Riga lies on the right bank of the Daugava, a short distance before the river meets the Gulf of Riga. Founded in 1201, the Latvian capital keeps its medieval core largely intact: a compact tangle of narrow lanes, church spires and small squares pressed against the water. On a map the Old Town reads as a dense knot beside the wide, calm sweep of the river.
When the old fortifications were removed in the nineteenth century, their line became a city canal and a ring of boulevards and parks. Beyond it spreads a district of broad, regular streets where roughly a third of the central buildings are Art Nouveau, one of the largest such collections in Europe. Across the river, bridges lead to Ķīpsala island and the quieter left bank.

Just southeast of the Old Town, the Central Market fills former Zeppelin hangars, a row of long parallel halls near the river and the railway station.
