Vilsandi is a small island off the west coast of Saaremaa in Estonia, at the edge of the open Baltic. It is low and flat, with an irregular outline of shallow bays, spits and points. Around it lies a wide scatter of smaller islets and rocks. From above, the land seems to dissolve gradually into the sea rather than ending at a clean coastline.
The island is the centre of Vilsandi National Park, and its protection as a bird sanctuary dates back to the early twentieth century. It is known as an important place for seabirds and migrating waterfowl. The island has a lighthouse, and it is only lightly populated, with few tracks and scattered farmsteads rather than a village grid.
