Vormsi lies between the Estonian mainland and Hiiumaa and is the fourth largest island in the country. It is a short ferry ride from Rohuküla, near Haapsalu. For centuries it was home to a Swedish-speaking community, part of the coastal Estonian Swedes, and many place names still show that heritage. Today it has a small population and a quiet, rural character.
On a map the island is irregular and low. Its coast is full of shallow bays, small headlands and islets that make the outline intricate.
