Nesher lies southeast of Haifa on the slopes of Mount Carmel, where the ridge descends toward the valleys and the Haifa Bay area. Its neighbourhoods sit on separate spurs and hilltops, divided by deep, wooded wadis. From above, the streets appear as tight curves and loops that follow the contours, with long green gaps between districts where the terrain is too steep to build on.
The town took its name from the Nesher cement works, founded here in the 1920s. Nesher is the Hebrew word for eagle, or more precisely for the griffon vulture. The factory's quarries cut into the mountainside, and the town grew up around the works before becoming a residential community with close ties to Haifa.
