Nias Island lies in the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Sumatra, part of a chain of islands running parallel to the mainland. It is long, running northwest to southeast, with a hilly interior crossed by rivers and covered in forest and plantations. Most roads follow the coasts. The largest town, Gunungsitoli, is on the northeast coast.
Nias is known for a strong megalithic tradition, with stone monuments and large traditional houses in southern villages such as Bawömataluo. Stone jumping, in which young men leap over a tall stone wall, is one of the island's best-known customs. A powerful earthquake in 2005 caused severe damage on the island.

This curved bay on the southern coast, well known among surfers, bends inward near Teluk Dalam. It gives the southern tip a clean, recognisable arc.
Hill country
The interior is hilly and forested, with rivers and scattered villages linked by smaller roads. On the poster it forms a lighter, quieter band between the busier coasts.
