Simeulue lies in the Indian Ocean off the western coast of Sumatra, part of Indonesia's Aceh province. It is elongated from northwest to southeast, with a hilly, forested interior and a coastline of small bays, headlands and fringing reefs. The main town, Sinabang, sits on a sheltered bay toward the southeast, and a road follows much of the coast.
The island is widely known for smong, an oral tradition passed down in songs and stories that teaches people to run to high ground when the sea withdraws after an earthquake. During the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, this knowledge is credited with saving most of the island's population. Its reef breaks also draw surfers from around the world.
