Nokia lies just west of Tampere in the Pirkanmaa region, on the Nokianvirta, the river that carries water from Lake Pyhäjärvi toward Lake Kulovesi. The town grew around the rapids, and the map still reflects that: the river forms a strong line through the centre, with homes, industrial sites and roads arranged along its banks and the lakeshores opening out on either side.
The town is best known as the namesake of a global company. In the 1860s the engineer Fredrik Idestam set up a wood-pulp mill on the rapids here, and the business that grew from it took the town's name before eventually becoming a telecommunications company known worldwide. Nokian Tyres, whose history is also tied to the town, is still based here.
