Norden is one of the oldest towns in East Frisia, in Lower Saxony, on flat marshland close to the North Sea coast. The historic centre is built around one of the largest market squares in Germany. It is lined with trees and older buildings, and the Ludgerikirche stands at its edge. The church is known for its organ by Arp Schnitger.
North of the town is Norddeich, Norden's harbour district. Ferries leave from here for the islands of Norderney and Juist, crossing the Wadden Sea. On the map, you can see straight dykes, drainage channels and polders. These show the constant work of holding back the sea and keeping the land dry.
