Noshiro sits on the coast of Akita Prefecture where the Yoneshiro River flows into the Sea of Japan. On the map, the river forms a wide curve along the edge of the city, and the harbour breakwaters stretch out into the sea. The city centre is laid out on the flat land between them.
For a long time Noshiro was known as a lumber town, handling Akita cedar floated down the river. Along the coast, a long band of black pines, the Kaze no Matsubara, was planted to protect the town from wind and sand. Noshiro is also famous in Japan for high-school basketball.
