Nouna is the capital of Kossi Province in the Boucle du Mouhoun region of northwestern Burkina Faso, not far from the border with Mali. It serves as a market and administrative centre for a wide rural area. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets set in a flat, open landscape of fields and savanna.
The town is known well beyond the region for its health research centre, which has followed the health of the local population for decades and contributed to studies across West Africa. This long-standing work has made the name Nouna familiar in international public health.
