Novelda sits in the middle Vinalopó valley in the province of Alicante, where the river bed runs as a thin line past the town. From above, the old centre is a tight cluster of short, irregular streets. Wider avenues and later housing blocks surround it, then give way to cultivated plots and the pale, broken ground of the surrounding hills.
The town is known for two very different things. One is its stone industry, as Novelda has long been a centre for cutting and trading marble. The other is saffron, which local firms have packed and sold around the world for generations. The Modernista heritage is just as distinctive, with a house-museum in the centre and the sanctuary of Santa María Magdalena on the hill of La Mola, next to the old castle.

The Vinalopó passes through the valley as a narrow, often dry channel, a faint line that follows the lowest ground past the town.
