Nyon sits on the northern shore of Lake Geneva, between Geneva and Lausanne. On a map, the town divides neatly in two: a compact old centre on a rise above the water, and a lower band of quays, harbour walls and lakeside paths. The shoreline runs as one smooth edge across the sheet, holding the whole composition in place.
The town began as a Roman colony, Colonia Julia Equestris, and Roman remains are still part of the centre. Above them stands the Château de Nyon, a white castle now used as a museum. Today the town is also known for the Paléo Festival held each summer, and as the home of UEFA's headquarters.

Short, steep streets connect the upper core to the water, while newer neighbourhoods spread back from the shore toward the railway and the vineyards of La Côte.
