Olesa de Montserrat lies in Catalonia, in the Baix Llobregat area northwest of Barcelona. The town stands on a hillside above the Llobregat river, and on a map the streets step down the slope toward the water in a series of terraces. A short distance upriver rises the Montserrat massif, whose serrated rock peaks dominate the horizon and give the town its name.
The old centre is a compact cluster of narrow streets on the upper part of the slope, while newer areas have spread downhill and along the valley.
