For centuries Olomouc was one of the main cities of Moravia, and its historic centre is among the largest preserved in the Czech Republic. On the map, the old town sits on raised ground above the Morava. Its streets open into a chain of squares, and a band of parks around it traces the line of the former fortifications.
The Holy Trinity Column on Upper Square is a baroque monument built in the first half of the eighteenth century and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The same square holds an astronomical clock that was remodelled in the socialist realist style after the Second World War. Six baroque fountains stand across the old town's squares.
Palacký University, the second-oldest in the Czech lands, gives Olomouc a large student population. Parks laid out along the line of the old fortifications wrap around the historic centre. They form a soft belt of open space between the old town and the new.

The river and its side channels curve past the eastern edge of the centre. They add flowing lines and small islands to the composition.
