Olot is the capital of the Garrotxa, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, and it is one of very few towns in Europe with volcanic cones inside its urban area. The Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park surrounds it, and on a map the town's streets curve around small, rounded hills that are in fact long-extinct volcanoes.
The most recognisable is Montsacopa, whose crater sits close to the centre and is crowned by the chapel of Sant Francesc; Montolivet and others shape the edges of the town. The Fluvià river runs along the southern side, and the fertile basin made the area a focus for the nineteenth-century Olot school of landscape painters.
