Omoa lies on the Gulf of Honduras, west of Puerto Cortés, where the coastal plain is at its narrowest. From above, the settlement forms a thin strip along the curve of the bay, with a road running parallel to the shore and short streets reaching down to the beach. Behind it the land climbs quickly into the green slopes of the Merendón mountains.
The town's best-known landmark is the Fortaleza de San Fernando de Omoa, a large triangular stone fortress built by the Spanish in the second half of the eighteenth century to protect the coast from pirates and British ships. Today it houses a museum, and its geometric outline stands out clearly on the map a short distance back from the water.
