Onda sits in the interior of the province of Castellón, near the valley of the Mijares. The town grew around a hill topped by a Moorish-era castle, sometimes called the castle of the three hundred towers. On a map, the old centre forms a knot of short, winding streets on the slopes below the castle, a clear contrast with the straighter streets of later expansion.
Onda is one of the centres of Spain's ceramic tile industry, and the region around it produces a large share of the country's tiles. That industry is visible from above. Large rectangular factory buildings and industrial estates spread across the flat land around the town, alongside orchards and roads.
