Orleans is a town in the south of Santa Catarina, set in hilly country between the coastal plain and the Serra Geral escarpment to the west. The town grew from a colonisation scheme in the late nineteenth century, and its name recalls the Orléans family, connected to the Brazilian imperial household through the marriage of Princess Isabel.
On the map, the town occupies a valley floor, with its centre close to the river and streets spreading outward along lower ground.
