Oskū is in East Azerbaijan province in northwestern Iran, a short distance southwest of Tabriz. It sits on the lower western flank of Mount Sahand, a large volcanic massif. The town is fairly compact, with a main road running through it. From there the streets spread out into the neighbouring orchards and gardens, then give way to open, sloping land.
The terrain gives the map its shape. Seasonal streams run down from Sahand, and gardens follow the valleys where the water collects. As the ground climbs, the built area thins out. Oskū county also contains Kandovan, the well-known village whose homes are carved into cone-shaped volcanic rock. It shows how closely people here have adapted to the mountain.
