Ōzu lies in western Ehime Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, in a basin where the Hiji River makes a wide curve. The town is often called the Little Kyoto of Iyo for the preserved merchant streets of its old quarter. On the map that historic core sits compactly beside the river's bend, with hills rising on the far banks and the valley stretching away upstream.
Ōzu Castle stands on a low rise at the edge of the river. Its main keep was rebuilt in wood in 2004 using traditional methods and surviving records, a rare reconstruction in Japan. Nearby, the villa of Garyū Sansō looks out over the water. In summer the river hosts ukai, the old practice of fishing with trained cormorants from wooden boats.
