Kurushima-Kaikyō Bridge
This chain of three suspension bridges crosses the fast tidal waters of the Kurushima Strait from Imabari to Ōshima. It is the first link of the Shimanami Kaido and the most striking line on the map.

Imabari covers a stretch of the northern coast of Shikoku in Ehime Prefecture and looks out over the Seto Inland Sea. Water defines the city on a map: a curved waterfront, harbour basins and a field of islands to the north. The bridges of the Shimanami Kaido, an expressway and cycling route that crosses to Onomichi in Hiroshima, link those islands together.
The city is best known in Japan for two industries. Imabari towels, valued for softness and absorbency, make up a large share of the country's towel production, and the shipyards along the coast make the area one of Japan's main shipbuilding centres. Imabari Castle, built by Tōdō Takatora, is unusual because its moats are filled with seawater.
