Onomichi lies on the Seto Inland Sea in Hiroshima Prefecture, stretched along a thin strip of flat land between steep hills and the Onomichi Channel. Across the narrow water is Mukaishima island, close enough that ferries cross in a few minutes. On a map the town is a long ribbon of streets hugging the shore, with the hills rising sharply behind it.
Temples, old houses and narrow stone paths cover the hillsides, linked by stairways rather than roads. Senkoji temple sits high above the town and can be reached by ropeway, and a walking route connects many of the temples on the slopes. From above, this part of the map breaks into a maze of small lanes that contrasts with the straight streets along the waterfront.
Onomichi is the starting point of the Shimanami Kaido, a road and cycling route that crosses a chain of islands by bridge to Imabari on Shikoku.
