Hiroshima is built on the delta of the Ōta River, which splits into several channels as it approaches Hiroshima Bay. From above, the city looks like a series of long islands separated by water, each crossed by bridges and filled with a dense grid of streets. The hills rise sharply around the delta's northern and western edges, limiting how far the flat city can spread.
On 6 August 1945, Hiroshima became the first city to be struck by an atomic bomb. The Peace Memorial Park now occupies the northern tip of an island where two river channels divide, and the ruined Atomic Bomb Dome stands on the opposite bank. The rebuilt castle lies a short distance north.
