Pacaraima is a town in the state of Roraima, in the far north of Brazil, right on the border with Venezuela. It stands at the northern end of the BR-174 highway, which runs up from Manaus through Boa Vista. Just across the line lies the Venezuelan town of Santa Elena de Uairén, and on a map the two face each other across the frontier.
The town is built on higher ground in the Pacaraima range. Its streets follow the hilly terrain rather than a strict grid, and the highway serves as the main axis. Much of the municipality lies within Indigenous lands, and the surrounding country of open savanna and hills looks very different from the rainforest that covers much of northern Brazil.
In recent years Pacaraima has been the main entry point for people crossing from Venezuela, and the town has been at the centre of that movement.
