Pakan is a small town in the Sarikei Division of Sarawak, on the Malaysian part of Borneo. It serves as the centre of its district. From above the town is modest: a short run of streets and shophouse rows surrounded by far more green space than built-up land. Rivers and hills shape the country around it.
The Pakan area is closely associated with the Iban people, and many communities in the district live in longhouses along the rivers and roads. On a map these settlements are small marks scattered through the countryside. They are linked to the town by thin, winding roads.
