Pakse stands at the confluence of the Xe Don and the Mekong in southern Laos, and its name refers to exactly that: the mouth of the Xe river. On a map, the town fills the tongue of land between the two rivers. A compact centre of streets lies close to the banks, and newer districts spread east along the main road.
The Lao-Nippon Bridge, completed in 2000 with Japanese support, carries the road across the Mekong in a span of well over a kilometre. It draws a strong, straight line across the wide water. The French set up Pakse as an administrative post in the early twentieth century, and the grid of the centre dates from that period.
Pakse is the capital of Champasak Province and a starting point for trips to the Bolaven Plateau, known for its coffee, and to the temple ruins of Wat Phou to the south. A Pakse map poster frames the confluence itself, where two rivers, a bridge and a small grid make a clear composition.
