Panzós lies in the southeastern part of Alta Verapaz, in the valley of the Polochic River. The river flows east through a broad lowland toward Lake Izabal and the Caribbean. The town sits on the valley floor, with a small grid of streets near the river and roads following the valley in both directions. Steep, forested slopes rise on either side.
Historically, Panzós was a river port. Goods from the Verapaz highlands, especially coffee, travelled down the valley by rail and were loaded onto boats on the Polochic for the journey to the lake and the coast. Today the surrounding land is used mainly for agriculture, and much of the population is Q'eqchi' Maya.

Near the river, a small grid of streets forms the town centre. It is the densest part of the map and stands out clearly against the open land around it.
Valley roads
Roads follow the valley east and west, linking Panzós with neighbouring communities. On the poster they form long lines that echo the course of the river.
