Papantla de Olarte sits on uneven ground in northern Veracruz, and its street plan shows it plainly. Instead of a flat grid, roads bend to follow ridges and dip into small ravines, so the blocks come out as wedges and irregular polygons. The historic centre gathers around the main square and its church, and from there lanes climb toward higher ground in several directions before thinning out into green countryside.
The town is known as a centre of Totonac culture and as one of the historic homes of Mexican vanilla, which has been grown in the surrounding hills for generations. It is also closely tied to the ceremony of the Voladores, the flying men who descend from a tall pole on ropes, a ritual recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. The archaeological site of El Tajín lies a short distance outside town.
