Paranatinga sits in central Mato Grosso, in upland country where the cerrado begins to give way to the forests of the southern Amazon basin. From above, the town is a tidy block of streets surrounded by a much larger pattern of farmland: broad rectangular fields, straight access tracks and thin lines of trees that follow the watercourses between them.
The town takes its name from the Paranatinga River, and the municipality lies in a region where several tributaries of the great northern rivers begin. On a map this shows up as fine, branching lines of streams that cut across the geometry of the fields, the only curves in an otherwise ruled landscape.
