Pattani sits near the mouth of the Pattani River, where it reaches a shallow, sheltered bay on the Gulf of Thailand. From above, the water is what you notice first. The river bends through town, and the bay and its sandy spit define the northern edge of the map. The streets fit in between them.
The city gave its name to the historic Sultanate of Patani, once an important trading port on the Malay Peninsula. Most residents today are Malay Muslims, and the Central Mosque of Pattani is one of the best-known buildings in the south. The province is also home to a campus of Prince of Songkla University.
