Pavia sits on the north bank of the Ticino, a few kilometres above its confluence with the Po. The historic centre keeps the outline of the Roman town, Ticinum. Its streets run in a near-regular grid, and the two main axes still cross close to the old forum. Beyond them, the ring of boulevards follows the line of the demolished Spanish walls.
Pavia was the capital of the Lombard kingdom, and its churches show that depth. San Michele Maggiore was the coronation church. San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro holds the tomb of Saint Augustine. The University of Pavia, formally founded in 1361, fills several courtyards in the centre. The Visconti Castle sits at the northern end of the main street.
