Pavlovsk lies south of St Petersburg, close to the town of Pushkin and the former imperial estate of Tsarskoye Selo. It grew around the residence given to the future Emperor Paul I in the late eighteenth century, and the palace and its grounds still define the town. Together with the other suburban palaces, it forms part of the UNESCO-listed historic centre of Saint Petersburg and its related monuments.
The map is shaped above all by the park. Pavlovsk Park is one of the largest landscape parks in Europe, a network of paths, avenues, ponds and clearings laid out along the Slavyanka River. The river loops through it in soft curves, and the paths follow it, creating a pattern that feels more like a drawing than a street plan.
