Penco lies on the eastern shore of the Bay of Concepción in Chile's Biobío Region. From above, the town is a long, narrow strip: streets run parallel to the beach, pressed between the calm water of the bay and a line of hills that climbs steeply inland. The coastline gives every map of Penco a strong curved edge along one side.
The town holds a notable place in Chilean history. Concepción was first founded here in 1550, and after a devastating earthquake and tsunami in 1751 the city was relocated to its present site further south. Penco kept its identity as a separate town, and today it sits within the greater Concepción area, linked by the coastal road and railway.
