Périgueux is the capital of the Dordogne department, set on a wide bend of the Isle river. From above, the river curves around the east and south of the historic centre. The medieval quarter climbs from the water toward the Cathedral of Saint-Front, and the streets gather tightly around it on the high ground.
The cathedral, with its multiple domes, is one of the most recognisable buildings in southwest France and part of the pilgrim routes to Santiago. West of the medieval town lies the Roman quarter of Vesunna: the ruins of the Tour de Vésone and a Gallo-Roman museum designed by Jean Nouvel.
